Chinese Artist Liu Bolin Disappears Into Kenny Scharf Bowery Mural
Artist Liu Bolin brought his vanishing act to Wall Street on Thursday, painting himself from head to toe so that he all but disappeared against the backdrop of the iconic “Charging Bull” statue.
Liu is China’s master of camouflage, an artist who seeks to hide himself within his work. His disappearance on Wall Street is part of “Hiding in the City,” an ongoing project that has seen him blend into Chinese landmarks old (the Great Wall) and new (the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing), as well as a series of visually stunning locations in Italy and Paris.
WSJ’s Ellen Gamerman profiled the 38-year-old Liu last week, ahead of the June 29 opening of his solo exhibition at the New York gallery Eli Klein Fine Art. His global popularity has skyrocketed, Gamerman noted, making Liu the fourth most searched among contemporary and modern artists on the site Artnet.
Here’s how his process works, according to Gamerman’s report:
"To create many of his works, he poses for a preliminary photo to figure out his position against the backdrop. He’s dressed in Chinese army fatigues with gel on his skin to protect him from the paint. His assistants then render the scene on top of him, so he fits into the picture like a piece in a jigsaw puzzle.."
After standing still and blending in with the charging bull, Liu is scheduled to create his hidden self-portraits at a magazine rack and a Kenny Scharf graffiti mural on Houston Street, among other New York locations.
