My encounters with Cy Twombly

When most of the artists still adhere to the established and stable images, Ye Yongqing flied out of this firm paradigm and shifted to the experiment of new painting.This was just his expectation of "new" painting.This "new" doubted of popular painting, subverted existing painting methods and deconstructed the dominant painting language.Based on the awareness and comprehension, Ye Yongqing established another different painting style.

It can be said that Ye Yongqing’s art is based on image analysis which contains a from-disorder-to- order notion.In other words, the free and jumbled token was transformed to well-organized visual structure.Then, how did he embody the meaning in his paintings?He used directly lantern slide to photograph the birds and other abstract patterns,and then projected them on canvas and enlarged. The lines may seem hasty graffiti,but in fact were elaborately processed.Through carefully painted,the meaningful form was took shape from the core--a black heavy line, beside which there were fine veins.Compared to American artist Cy Twombly,he pursues rationally occasional beauty on canvas,but Ye Yongqing is perceptually in pursuit of the course which is from chaos to order.Cy Twombly uses incorporative charcoal pencil,colored pencil,chalk and oil cdour, sometimes also paints waved, dynamic and doodles galvanic with written words.But Ye Yongqing uses “eyebrow pencil” to portray abstract linellae dot-and-dash which constitutes poetic visual language. Especially his latest paintings expend this further.He completed seven abstract-paintings “Injure·Heart” which consisted of the identic compositional sketch, method,symbol and style.Their different manifestations are:Either the ground colors of each painting are different,or delineative colors of symbol in every painting are also different.This combination forms a totally different relationship. Therefore, his paintings clearly convey a new concept—he can find the artistic possibility from both identity and otherness.And this possibility is obviously infinite. For this reason,Ye Yongqing’s works are seemingly chaotic graffiti signs,but actually imply his quest for new aesthetics and new order of art.

Exactly because of this awareness, Ye Yongqing lets incidental symbols coexist with ideal symbols so that the occasionality and definite idea are constructed to empty and quiet abstract-beauty.This brings Ye Yongqing to a unrestrainable free world.In this way, he directly keeps himself out of fashion, various trends or regional School, which forms an artistic language of distinct personality.

Clearly,Ye Yongqing takes exploring unpredictability as purport of his own painting’s aesthetics,which inevitably prompts him to self-derive from the "negation” of painting—he negates concrete “shape” and the depth of meaning.Ye Yongqing depends on the “emptiness” of similar traditional Chinese painting.He uses this emptiness to operate the location and organize the structure,which implies his personal psychology and life experiences and shows his own will in art.In this sense, his pursuit of freedom in painting depends not only on his subversion of painting- noumenon,but also on his choice on every possibility and the seeking of unpredictability.
