Chinese contemporary artist Liu Bolin, known as “The Invisible Man” and “Vanish Gogh” after his 2005 “Hiding in the Streets” and “Hiding in New York” series, has continued to amaze art lovers with his incredible work. Bolin’s artistic camouflaging abilities have led him to a long roster of solo exhibitions including his latest, “Lost in Art.”
According to My Modern Met, the exhibition, which will be held at Eli Klein Fine Art in New York, will feature photos of Bolin’s performance art in the two camouflaging series as well as his first sculptural undertaking.
Bolin’s sculptural piece “Peony,” part of his “Chargers Series,” is constructed with objects such as cellphone chargers that are made to resemble peony flowers, a commonly used symbol in Chinese art.
“This series tackles the issue of material dependence and how, globally, people are obedient followers of product obsoletism,” My Modern Met said. “Many of the newer works in Bolin’s whole exhibit focus on hard-hitting subjects like commercialism, unemployment, and pollution.”
In 2001, Bolin graduated with a masters from the sculpture department of Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Ode To Art reported that he began to garner attention for his work after his 1998 solo exhibition in Beijing. Since then, Bolin’s work has been featured at the contemporary photography festival Les Recontres d’Arles, Boxart Gallery in Verona, Dashanzi Art Zone in Beijing, Galerie Bertin-Toublanc in Paris, and Forma Foundation for Photography in Milan.
According to the Business Insider, Bolin typically spends up to 10 hours painting himself in order to blend in with the background art.
The “Lost in Art” exhibit will continue until May 11, 2012.
