According to Xin Hua News, this Monday, July 9th, marked the 100th anniversary of China's National Museum in Beijing, capital of China. As the country’s top leaders call for more promotion of Chinese culture and exchanges between China and the world, a showcase of masterpieces of Renaissance including Michelangelo’s famed statue David is being displayed at China's National Museum.
However, when the significant show was broadcast by CCTV, Michelangelo’s David body was covered up with PS mosaic effect. The news Immediately sparked heated debate on Sina Weibo and induced wide media attention. Many netizens expresse their doubts, arguing that for this kind of historic artwork is it necessary to say “Not for Children”?
Some respondents believe this kind of practice does sound absurd, but it is understandable that CCTV has always been conservative, it is not easy because of China’s regulations and restrictions on art broadcasting. Although some restrictions are out of date, as long as the restrictions are still there, CCTV has to comply with it.
Many viewers, on the other hand, consider it as a funny joke, “Human body is the most beautiful creation in the eyes of artists, the art of Ancient Greece expresses the aesthetic of humanity liberation. But, the question is, thousands of years later, if David is dressed up, what is the feeling of artist Michelangelo?
“I couldn’t help bursting into laughter when I saw the news, who the hell thought of this ridiculous method?” a viewer said. Jiu Yao, a visitor, wrote on Sina Weibo “It is undoubtedly that it is a piece of art treasure though, it shows reversely kinda of erotic while being dealt with mosaic effect”.
Fortunately, the mosaic was moved away when the news is rebroadcast.
