Darren Cullen, a commercial street artist whose firm specialises in providing spray-can artwork and branding to major international companies was arrested, along with two other men, by British Transport Police on Tuesday (BTP) and barred from coming within a mile of any Olympic venue. The Guardian reports that Cullen, who has had major commissions by Adidas (a sponsor of the games),claims that he has never painted illegally. In a statement to the press he said that he had not been questioned over alleged criminal damage, but over a website he set up over a year ago on behalf of a client. It is likely that the website, which is all about the history of graffiti, was seen by the Metropolitan police as a potential agitator of disruption and defacement. And with the Olympics fast approaching the authorities are keen to suppress and eradicate any potential sources of unruly behaviour. 'The arrests were in connection with a live and ongoing criminal investigation into linked incidents of criminal damage between January 2007 and July 2012', said a BTP spokesman. The men have been bailed until November under strict conditions restricting their access to rail, tube and tram transport, preventing them from owning spray paint or marker pens, and ordering them not to go near any Olympic venue in London or elsewhere.
