Saving Sydney's Street Art: City to Develop Street Art Mural Register

2012-07-31 09:05:37 Nicholas Forrest

KGV Mural The KGV Mural's predominant themes relate to the historical significance of The Rocks and were suggested by local residents. They include the impact of the Harbour Bridge on the community and the built and natural features in and around the locality, including the harbour and maritime transport.

In an effort to document and preserve the most valuable and iconic pieces of public aerosol art in and around Sydney, the City of Sydney is in the process of developing a register of significant aerosol art murals. The City’s current public art collection includes around twenty murals commissioned by the City over the last thirty years

The proposed register will be an extension of a survey of murals carried out in 2004 by the City’s then Graffiti Contractor. The purpose of this survey was to identify murals which should not be removed. A total of 150 murals were identified.

According to the government tender documents, “aerosol art is a particularly urban means of artistic expression with a complex set of associations regarding its origin, relevance, creation and longevity. The City of Sydney recognises the artistic and social value of aerosol art, as well as the shared nature of the public domain.”

The City of Sydney actively encourages public art through projects such as Streetware through which selected artists and collectives were invited to install artworks in the City's southern laneways and temporarily transform unused spaces into creative canvases to catch the attention and imagination of passersby.

The Streetware program in 2012 will focus on more prominent buildings, reflecting the growing acceptance of this art form in the community and the City’s support for new forms of artistic expression.

Although graffiti is considered to be a significant problem in Sydney, the City of Sydney recognises that within this area of artistic expression there are a number of interesting and iconic murals. Some of these murals have been commissioned by the City or by NSW Government agencies, others have been commissioned by property owners following the DA process while others have just “appeared” and become cherished by the community over the years.

In addition to those murals that remain static, some walls are regarded as “live” walls which are carefully curated and updated by artists and their changeable nature again has become a welcome part of the cultural environment.

The City of Sydney is currently looking for a consultant or consultant team to create a register of murals and to review processes and policies associated with murals, street art and graffiti.
