The Association of International Photography Art Dealers, a non-profit organization comprising the world’s leading photography art dealers, has announced that Catherine Edelman, Catherine Edelman Gallery, Chicago, has been elected as AIPAD’s next president. Her two-year term will begin on January 1, 2013.
“Catherine Edelman, who is celebrating the 25th anniversary of her gallery this year, has made a substantial contribution to the field of contemporary photography as a dealer, a publisher, and a curator. Her experience and insight will be of enormous benefit to AIPAD,” said Stephen Bulger, President, AIPAD and Stephen Bulger Gallery, Toronto.
An AIPAD member for more than 20 years, Edelman opened her gallery in 1987. Catherine Edelman Gallery quickly became established as one of the leading galleries devoted exclusively to the art of photography in the Midwest. From its inception, the gallery has exhibited prominent contemporary photographers alongside new and young talent, showcasing a broad range of subject matter and photographic techniques. Debuting with the Ballad of Sexual Dependency by Nan Goldin, Catherine Edelman Gallery has shown work ranging from street photography by Susan Meiselas and Sebastião Salgado to fashion photography by Annie Leibovitz, Herb Ritts, and Matthew Rolston to social-conscious work by Richard Misrach and Allen Ginsberg, and many more. Catherine Edelman Gallery has co-published a number of books including Written in Memory: Portraits of the Holocaust, with photographs by Jeffrey Wolin, in association with Chronicle Books. She has curated many traveling exhibitions including Killer Shots: A Photographic Response to War upon the start of the Iraq war in 2003.
“No other organization has the depth and breadth of experience in fine art photography that you find with AIPAD,” noted Edelman. “I look forward to building on the goals and accomplishments of Stephen Bulger and the board as AIPAD continues its mission to grow, representing the best dealers working in photography today.”
