Thieves Strike at Kunsthal Rotterdam

2012-10-17 11:50:50 未知

The New York Times reports that thieves have broken into the Kunsthal Rotterdam and stolen works from the Triton Foundation collection by artists including Picasso, Monet, Gauguin, and Matisse. These works are potentially worth millions of dollars. Police officials have not commented on how the heist was performed, but the works have been entered into the Art Loss Register and cannot be sold at an official auction house. Kunsthal director Emily Ansenk stated, “It’s every museum director’s worst nightmare.” While the museum reports that all security systems were functional and state of the art, the police who arrived five minutes after the alarm was tripped around three in the morning found no sign of the thieves. The stolen works include: Pablo Picasso’s 1971 Harlequin Head; Claude Monet’s 1901 Waterloo Bridge, London and Charing Cross Bridge, London; Henri Matisse’s 1919 Reading Girl in White and Yellow; Paul Gauguin’s 1898 Girl in Front of Open Window; Meyer de Haan’s Self-Portrait, around 1890, and Lucian Freud’s 2002 work Woman with Eyes Closed. The Triton Collection was put together by multimillionaire Willem Cordia, an investor and businessman, and his wife, Marijke Cordia-Van der Laan.
