Following its successful run at Beijing’s Today Art Museumthis past summer, famed photographer Mario Testino’s “Private View” exhibition brings is set to hit the Shanghai Art Museum from November 3-December 2, 2012. Packed with nearly 100 photos of fashion, music, film (and actual) royalty, the show presents an impressive cross-section of Testino’s portfolio, culled from the photographer’s Taschen hardback of the same name.
As Testino told attendees of the exhibition’s grand opening in Beijing this June, “I felt the best way of doing this [exhibition in China] was by selecting the images that mean most to me personally at the moment, hence the name ‘Private View.’ In conceiving this exhibition and having the chance to look back over the years I found it was like understanding a puzzle for me, seeing how the fashion work influenced the celebrity portrait work, which in turn influenced the royal work and so on. I felt the only way of making the exhibition was to show all these different sides of my life together, creating a private view of the world I have been documenting.”
Speaking this week about his exhibition’s Shanghai whistle-stop, Testino added, “After I came to Shanghai to shoot for the September issue of US Vogue, I became obsessed with the vitality of the city, the development and people there. This exhibition in Shanghai gives me the opportunity to introduce people there to my work.”
