The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts brought in over seventeen million dollars at a Christie’s auction last night, reports Robin Pogrebin of the New York Times. This past September, the foundation dispersed its entire Warhol collection, electing to sell a majority of the works exclusively through Christie’s while donating others. The decision furthers its goal to act almost exclusively as a grant-making association. Monday’s sale auctioned of 354 works, some which have never been exhibited publicly; it is the first of what will be several auctions at Christie’s to raise money for the foundation. Notable lots included a screen print and paper collage of Jacqueline Kennedy that fetched over $626,000, double the high estimate of $300,000. A self-portrait of the artist, estimated from $12,000 to $18,000, sold for $50,000.
