Kate Middleton, The Duchess Of Cambridge will have a newly commissioned official portrait hanging in the National Portrait Gallery sometime in 2013. This event will most likely take place before the birth of her first child, expected in the late spring/early summer.
An inside source has revealed that the commission has gone to the 2006 winner of the BP Portrait award, the 64 -year-old Paul Emsley, from Bradford on Avon. Since becoming patron to the National Portrait Gallery, in central London rumours including several names such as, David Hockney, Jemma Phipps, Jenny Saville and Aleah Chapin (the 2012 BP Portrait Award winner) have been banded around. However It is now thought that the commission will go to Emsley. The Bradford artist's picture is likely to divide opinion according to the art critic Brian Sewell who has branded his work ‘sickening’.
Meanwhile Legoland model maker Justin Ramsden has created Lego heads of Prince William and Kate Middleton. The heads took the model maker nearly 100 hours to build using 10,850 bricks and are based on photographs of the Royal Couple. Legoland has been no stranger to Royal themed creations in their Windsor theme park. During the run up to the Royal wedding they made a perfect replica of Buckingham palace complete with the Royal Family on the balcony waving to the crowds of onlookers. They also made a reconstruction of the wedding kiss between the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
Paul Emsley has stated on his website; " I have always loved drawing. The dryness of the paper and the chalk demand precision and exactness. It quickly exposes one’s weaknesses and mistakes, leaving no room for cleverness or tricks. In my drawings I try to emphasize the singularity and silence of the form. By a careful balancing of tones I emphasise the way in which light and shade fall across the subject. By creating a settled half-light I try to transform the existence of the object from the ordinary to something more profound".
