Norton Museum hires deputy director

2013-02-20 11:52:29 未知

The Norton Museum has hired James Brayton Hall as deputy director, museum officials announced Wednesday.

Hall will join the staff in April. Like Hope Alswang, the Norton’s executive director and chief executive officer, he formerly worked at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, where Alswang headed The Museum of Art from 2005 to August 2009. Hall was assistant director of the museum from 2006 to 2010 and director of campus design and exhibitions from 1996 to 2006.

“He has a deep understanding of all aspects of museum management from both the administrative and curatorial perspectives,” Alswang said.

At the Norton, he will be responsible for all operational functions. He will be the intermediary between the executive director and museum management, overseeing exhibition design, building operations, security and visitor services. Charles Stainback, the museum’s current deputy director, is leaving the Norton March 22 to become director of the Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa.

Hall comes to the Norton from the Providence Preservation Society, where he has served as executive director since 2010. While at the society, he oversaw an annual operating budget of $400,000. During his tenure, membership and annual giving grew, the overhead was reduced and the organization secured a $350,000 grant — the largest in its history — to purchase a 1769 schoolhouse as its new headquarters.

At the Rhode Island School of Design, Hall taught graduate level seminars in curatorial practice, exhibition design, and 20th century design history. He curated the exhibition “Marcel Breuer: Architecture and Design” and oversaw the design and installation of the museum’s new Paula and Leonard Granoff Galleries of 20th Century Art and Design. The Norton has been working with the London-based Foster + Partners on an architectural master plan.

Hall holds a bachelor of science degree in architecture from the University of Virginia and a master’s degree in landscape architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design. He lectures extensively on historic preservation and architectural history, with an emphasis on the recent past.
