Julia Marciari-Alexander has been named executive director of the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. She replaces Gary Vikan, who has resigned after some twenty-seven years at the museum, eighteen of which he spent as director, reports Carol Vogel of the New York Times. Marciari-Alexander is currently the deputy director for curatorial affairs at the San Diego Museum of Art, a position she assumed when she joined the museum in 2008. Priot to that, she spent ten years at the Yale Center for British Art. Said Walters trustee Ellen Bernard: “We were looking for a dynamic leader to enhance our mission of bringing art and people together in Baltimore and beyond through education, exhibitions, and innovative use of technology, and we’ve found that and more in Julia.”
