The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has announced that it will be giving the San Antonio Museum of Art $500,000 to support the new joint position of curator of American art and chief curator of the collections. The grant, to be used over three and a half years, will support a position that’s also being endowed by Marie Halff in honor of her late husband. “The support of the Mellon Foundation of the San Antonio Museum of Art demonstrates that our museum has arrived on the national stage and validates the efforts and dedication of our founders and board of trustees,” said museum director Katherine C. Luber. The new curator will oversee the museum’s American art collection, which comprises over 1,500 works, including pieces by John Singleton Copley, Marsden Hartley, and Andrew Wyeth.
