The Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art’s First Awards, held at the Brooklyn Museum in June, will honor director Julie Taymor.
Ms. Taymor rose to fame with her Broadway production of The Lion King, for which she was the first woman to win a Tony Award for best direction of musical, and has helmed films like Frida and, most recently, an adaptation of The Tempest.
This is the second edition of the Sackler Center First Awards. Last year, the Sackler Center honored 15 women who were first in their fields: Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Sandra Day O’Connor, Marin Alsop, Connie Chung, Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole, Wilhelmina Cole Holladay, Sandy Lerner, Lucy R. Lippard, Wilma Mankiller, Toni Morrison, Linda Nochlin, Jessye Norman, Judith Rodin, Muriel Siebert, Susan Stroman, and Faye Wattleton.
