The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, announced two appointments in the department of medieval art and the Cloisters, the museum’s branch for medieval art in northern Manhattan. Peter Barnet has been named senior curator of the department and C. Griffith Mann will become the Michel David-Weill curator in charge. Both begin their posts on September 1. Barnet has lead the medieval art department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art since 1998, curating exhibitions like “Images in Ivory: Precious Objects of the Gothic Age,” 1997, and the upcoming “Medieval Treasures from Hildesheim,” 2013-14. In his new role, he will focus on scholarship, taking on new projects in research and writing.
Since 2008, Griffith Mann has served as the deputy director and chief curator of the Cleveland Museum of Art, leading the institution during its recent renovation and expansion. He is a specialist in late medieval and early Renaissance Italy, and has written books on civic patronage, painting, and devotion in Tuscany.
