Celebrate Art in SE5 With The Camberwell Arts Festival

Head to Camberwell tomorrow for the first day of a nine-day festival of art based in and around SE5.
The Camberwell Arts Festival aims to take art out of the studio and into street to showcase the area’s artistic heritage. The festival has taken place every June since 1994; this year’s show includes events on Camberwell Green, Ruskin Park and Burgess Park; in Camberwell College of Arts and the South London Gallery; in St Giles Church and the Blue Elephant Theatre; as well as in pubs and cafes around Camberwell. Special activities range from foraging walks and talks to art exhibitions and open studios, plus theatre, poetry, “tantric art” and even a pub crawl.
The festival kicks off on Saturday with an art picnic on Camberwell’s biggest picnic rug on Camberwell Green, and finishes with Chutney 7, a nod to the ancient Camberwell Fairs, also on the Green on Sunday 23 June.
In between, look out for Life Drawing on the No12 bus; a Tuesday-night concert by the Camberwell Community Choir; a knitting circle on the Overground line; and the festival-long Moveable Feast: edible artwork, tasty performances and food-inspired art in Camberwell’s many cafes and restaurants.
The Camberwell Arts Festival runs from 15 to 23 June. Many events are free. Visit camberwellarts.org.uk/festival to find out more.
