The Guardian’s Mark Brown notes that South African–born artist Susanne Du Toit has been selected as this year’s winner of the BP Portrait Award. The prize comes with $47,000, as well as a commission, worth about $8,000, details of which have yet to be determined. Du Toit’s portrait of her son, along with fifty-four other contending works, will be shown at the National Portrait Gallery in an exhibition that opens tomorrow. Sandy Nairne, director of the gallery and chairman of the judging panel, praised Du Toit’s painting, calling it "simple but outstanding.”
