A Hong Kong Pavilion will be at Masterpiece London for the first time. Around 30 pieces of contemporary ink paintings and sculpture by Hong Kong and mainland Chinese artists will be shown from June 27 to July 3 at the Chelsea fair.
The pavilion is sponsored by Fine Art Asia, a local art and antique fair, with the support of Hong Kong’s Economic and Trade Office in London. In return, Masterpiece London will present a European Pavilion at Fine Art Asia 2013, taking place in Hong Kong from October 4 to 7. The partnership strengthens East-West ties within the fine art and antiques industry and also helps to “introduce a wide variety of Western museum-quality fine art for Asian collectors so as to take fine art collecting in Asia to the next level,” says Calvin Hui, Co-Chairman and Director of Fine Art Asia.
Four galleries are participating in the Hong Kong Pavilion: 3812 Contemporary Art Projects, Alisan Fine Arts, Andy Hei Ltd., and Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery. The selected works emphasize the city’s unique cultural heritage as well as traditional Chinese aesthetics. Two sets of Chinese blackwood furniture from the Qing Dynasty will be showcased, one used for playing mahjong, the other for drinking tea. Artists from Hong Kong include Lui Shou Kwan, one of the founders of the New Ink Painting movement in Hong Kong, and Fang Zhaoling, a pioneering female artist of the 20th century. Works by Hong Kong-raised, internationally renowned architect and designer Chi Wing Lo are also presented.
