Ropac gallery shows cream of 30 years’ work

Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac is staging a series of events to celebrate its 30th anniversary this summer. Important works that the gallery has shown and sold over the years—including pieces by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Georg Baselitz, Joseph Beuys and Andy Warhol—have been returned on loan for the exhibition “30 Years” (25 July-28 August), held across both the gallery’s Salzburg spaces, Villa Kast and Halle.

A second show, dedicated to Robert Mapplethorpe—one of the first American artists to show with Ropac in Salzburg in the 1980s—is to be organised by the French actress Isabelle Huppert (Villa Kast, 30 August-26 October).

The gallery has also commissioned a “word sculpture” play by the Austrian artist Erwin Wurm. The Small in the Great, the Great in the Great, the Great in the Small and the Small in the Small is set in a Wurm-designed kitchen, where characters include a chopping board, a shopping bag and a pair of high heels. Directed by Matthias Hartmann, it opened on 25 July in the Halle space.

Ropac started his gallery in Salzburg in 1983 and now has four spaces: two in Salzburg and two in Paris. “When I started, the art world was so small that you knew everyone,” he says. “The conversation has grown so much; now, you can’t avoid art, you can’t open a magazine without seeing art. I would never have imagined, or dreamed, of this 30 years ago.”
