Very Unsubtle Sculpture Portraying Charles Saatchi’s Choking “Tiff” Lands in London Gallery

Just when Charles Saatchi thought he couldn’t be demonized any further, an unnamed artist has riffed on the recent incident in which the mega-collector was seen gripping his then (now-ex) wife Nigella Lawson’s throat at a London restaurant. Saatchi dismissed the incident — which was captured in pictures published all over the world — as a “playful tiff.” But no one bought it, including the London police, who invited Saatchi to stop by their headquarters for a chat.
Now, meet “Playful Tiff,” the sculpture (above) — on view at London’s Jealous Gallery. It depicts a man outfitted in a crisp business suit with arm outstretched and hand posed in the same choking motion, flesh that’s colored fire-engine red (perhaps a reference to the “unreasonable behavior” cited by Lawson in her divorce filing), and devil’s horns sprouting from his also very vermillion-hued head.
Lest anyone jump to conclusions, an accompanying sign near the sculpture reads: “PLEASE NOTE THIS IS NOT CHARLES SAATCHI [NOT is also emphasized in red] PLEASE FEEL FREE TO TAKE A PICTURE OF YOURSELF BEING STRANGLED BY NOT CHARLES SAATCHI ON YOUR MOBILE PHONE.” According to the sign, the piece was “donated anonymously.”
