Warhol's Works on Paper Selling Exhibit in Hong Kong

2013-08-30 15:21:57 未知

Andy Warhol’s drawing of a shoe covered in gold leaf and his sketch of Hong Kong from the 1950s are coming to town as part of a selling exhibition of the Pop master’s work.

The show titled “From Warhol, With Love” is primarily devoted to the artist’s works on paper and will open at Sotheby’s Hong Kong gallery on September 12. More than 40 Warholian items have been brought over from S|2, the private sale and gallery arm of Sotheby’s global contemporary art department.

The wide range of works, from ink and graphite sketches to a large folding screen covered in colorful drawings of butterflies, provide a window into the mind of Warhol. Angelika Li, Gallery Director, Sotheby’s Hong Kong Gallery, says the works on paper demonstrate Warhol’s “fashionista instincts” and his artistic experimentation with different styles and techniques.

A drawing of “Hong Kong, China, 1956” done in blue ballpoint pen on paper captures an Old Hong Kong street scene with tenement buildings, crowded streets, and a glimpse of lush hills in the background. A graphite sketch on paper shows the outline of an androgynous portrait in the unmistakable style of Warhol’s “Ladies and Gentlemen” series of works. The most striking item in the exhibit might be one of Warhol’s highly coveted folding screens on which the artist drew butterflies in mid-flight using his neon Pop hues.
