Carole Feuerman: The Golden Mean opens at Mana Contemporary

JERSEY CITY, NJ.- Mana Contemporary presents Carole A. Feuerman’s newest hyper-realistic sculpture as part of its fall exhibitions. The Golden Mean opened September 29.

Feuerman’s newest collection of work, most notably life-size and monumental bronze figures, will are displayed on Mana Contemporary’s exterior grounds. As part of the outdoor installation, Feuerman debuted her newest work, a sculpture of Olympic gold medalist swimmer Lauren Perdue, floating in a pool in a backstroke pose.

The centerpiece of Feuerman’s solo exhibition is a towering 16-foot male diver moments before doing a back dive. Feuerman’s main focus for this piece was the diver’s arched body and the sensuous c-shape it creates. Two years in the making, and more than 8,000 hours of labor, The Golden Mean is part of a series of swimmers and bathers that Feuerman began working on in the late ‘70s. The work is an icon for achieving the impossible, for the struggle of survival and strength and resilience of the human spirit. This piece is a testament to Feuerman’s ambitious vision by successfully engineering a two-ton sculpture to stand upside down on 6-inch wrists. The Golden Mean debuted in the fall of 2012 on the riverfront in Peekskill, NY as part of an installation for the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art.

Further depicting a desire for balance and harmony, Feuerman’s monumental painted bronze work, Quan, features a larger-than-life female figure resting peacefully atop a stainless steel ball. The title of this work is derived from the Chinese name for the ‘goddess of compassion.’ In Buddhist imagery, the goddess is depicted looking down, symbolizing her watching over the world. In Feuerman’s sculpture, the figure is gracefully poised atop the sphere (a metaphor for the world), which is polished to a mirror finish, allowing viewers to reflect and connect to the work on a personal level.

Carole Feuerman is internationally recognized as one of the world’s most renowned hyperrealist sculptors with a highly established career that spans over 40 years. During this time, she has had six museum retrospectives of her work and has been featured in art fairs all over the world. Such exhibitions include the Beijing Biennale, the Armory Show, the Florence Biennale of Contemporary Art, and the Venice Biennale. She maintains both a studio and the Carole A. Feuerman Sculpture Foundation at Mana Contemporary.
