Wang Qingzhou: Changes Mean Vividness

It seems that people have a stereotype for the artist Wang Qingzhou, and in their eyes, Mr. Wang is an artist who draws the colorful traditional Chinese paintings of flowers and birds or a talent who merges calligraphy works into paintings. However, in my opinion, what he creates is more than that. There is always new energy and new conception in his paintings, as if everything is in motion and something new is predicted.

“Change” is an everlasting theme in the art of Mr. Wang’s paintings. No matter which subject is chosen or which color is used, his paintings always bring me something fresh. Recently, he shifts his focus from nature to society gradually and draws a group of characters. His figures seem to have the feeling of “gradual change”. We can experience this feeling through the appreciation of the Dai Girl created by Mr. Wang. At the first sight, what we can see is just multicolor, but when we savor it in detail, we can find the subtle meanings. Someone regards the beautiful colors as the skirt of the girl, while someone regards the colors as gorgeous flowers. Personally, I tend to agree with the latter, since there is something in common which helps us to find the connection between this painting and the works previously created by Mr. Wang. The transfer from plants to characters doesn’t come in one day. The Dai Girl, as a whole, depicts a beautiful girl who appears little by little among the flowers, and the effect of highlight is thus stronger. It seems as if a new direction of arts is conceived. Now we look at his work again and we feel suddenly enlightened. In fact, every step of his works implies a clue. These changes do not come on a whim but and gradually forms during his continuous creation after a careful consideration.

In this way, I think “change” is the most appropriate assessment for the painting art of Mr. Wang Qingzhou. His creations are not confined to one style, but a combination of many flavors. He merges the contemporary factors into traditional factors magically and creates a style full of movement. From his paintings, we never see any dominant elements, but we can find the confliction and unity of different elements. Thus unique aesthetics is formed in the process, it is beauty of movement and it brings us freshness. In his work the Beauty Looking Back, we can see a pretty and charming girl. Her hair style is an expression of modern fashion and aesthetics while her graceful figure shows the charm of ancient style in China. Two different styles interweave with each other while each remains independent, which shows a unique interest - “the interest of art”.

Most of figures in Wang Qingzhou’s paintings are not concrete but only have basic structures, which remains some space for the imagination of audiences. Something is kept properly while something abandoned in his works, so that the feeling of “movement” in his works becomes stronger and livelier. As a matter fact, the “change” of Wang Qingzhou is not limited to themes and materials, but more like an expression of “individualism”. According to the research of the development of art, it is not difficult to find that real art is not accomplished by copying and drifting with the current but exists in the individuality. Therefore, I hope the changeable art of Wang Qingzhou could provide a new direction for the development of current art.
