ATHENS.- NEON Organization presents an exhibition of works by Martin Kippenberger at the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens. Entitled ‘A Cry for Freedom’, and curated by Dimitris Paleocrassas, the show will present over 60 works including paintings, sculptures, hotel drawings and photographs, and is the first time that Kippenberger’s work will be displayed in a museum environment in Greece.

Kippenberger travelled extensively and was known as one of the most versatile and prolific post-war German artists. Amongst the seminal works on view is 'The Raft of the Medusa', a series created in the final year of Kippenberger's life, when he was forced to face his own mortality. The humour, apparent in both the title and content of his earlier bodies of work has been replaced with explicit references to the great masters in what seems to be an attempt to cement his place amongst them and live on through his work.

Sandra Marinopoulos | President, Nicholas and Dolly Goulandris Foundation – Museum of Cycladic Art said, “It is with great pleasure that the Museum of Cycladic Art is joining forces with the cultural organization NEON to present the exhibition ‘Martin Kippenberger: A Cry for Freedom’. On a personal note, I feel honored to be collaborating with Dimitris Daskalopoulos, a long-time and ardent patron of contemporary art, and his organization NEON.”

Dimitris Daskalopoulos | Founder, NEON said, “NEON’s collaboration with the Museum of Cycladic Art, which has kindly given the exhibition a home, is an excellent example of what can be achieved when arts institutions join forces to open contemporary culture up to the public. I am proud that, together, we have shown how an institutionally inclusive approach can work in practice.”

Susanne Kippenberger, the artist’s sister, will give a talk on the life and works of Martin Kippenberger on 21 November 2013 at 7pm.
