Scaling Down: Architect Frank Gehry to Exhibit Sculpture

Architect Frank Gehry has created a series of light sculptures, Fish Lamps. These are to be exhibited at Gagosian Davies Street from November 7.
On the side of his long architectural career spanning five decades, Gehry has been quietly experimenting with the smaller-scale medium of sculpture. Gehry’s first series of Fish Lamps were originally created in the mid-1980s, and were shown at Gagosian Los Angeles in 1984. The idea was said to have originated while Gehry was working with the plastic laminate ColorCore; when he accidentally shattered a piece, it reminded him of fish scales. Now Gehry has revived the motif for his latest works. In many ways they reflected his architectural style, being relatively large in size and jagged in texture and shape. However, Gagosian promises the new works will be even bolder than the original Fish sculptures.
Little is known of Ghery as a sculptor, but the starchitect regularly hits the headlines. It was announced this weekthat Gehry would be collaborating with fellow-architect Norman Foster on Phase 3 of theBattersea Power Station redevelopment. His previous building projects have been equally high profile, and include the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein, and the Walt Disney Concert HallLos Angeles. His buildings have occasionally encountered structural issues – most notably the MIT’s Ray and Maria Stata Centre, which had such substantial problems with leaking and falling debris that the university took out a lawsuit against him.
