In current Chinese art circles, most of the female artists are not willing to describe themselves as artists with femininity. They claim that art does not make a feature of gender. I think this is because they want to be treated as “artists” instead of “female artists”. Unlike them, Wu Huiling states clearly that she is a female artist, who reveals the personality of Chinese women long hidden in the history. In another word, she possesses a strong emotional resonance on the destiny of Chinese women in different ears, and eager to express it by her own brush.

　　Seeing the women’s image in different historical ears in Wu Huiling’s paintings, I can easily feel the littleness and weakness of the individual against the time. Ancient costumes, strict looking, awkward gestures and gloomy tone of color all represent the sense of history. All these elements are presented in a implied way so the audience won’t take them as a rubbing of history books but feel the indescribable perspective to exam the history on a woman’s point of view, which even make the history itself colorful.

　　Unlike her works mentioned above, she pay more attention to the future in Youth. She painted out the confidence and hope of the young people, as well as her own personal experience in it.

　　The other theme of Wu Huiling’s paintings is illusion. Mysterious lights, different figures of women, tenebrous jungles and marshland are all interwoven together to form a projection of human’s inner thoughts. Interestingly, neither modern women nor female from the future appear in the paintings, it is the ladies of ancient China with old time costume and facial expression that are depicted to lead us to this world of fantasy. They act as a bridge to connect from the past to the future. All this elements make the painting reveal a splendid and gorgeous spiritual realm.

　　As a conclusion, the meaning of Wu Huiling’s work, as for me, is not only clarify all the demand and appeal of women’s right in history, but also provide a completely new bright and lively vision of history, which is about women, but beyond gender.
