The Lower East Side art district is pretty much completely out of control at this point, spreading out in every direction and growing ever denser with galleries. It’s wild!
The latest entrant to the rapidly growing scene comes from artists Dora Budor, Alex Mackin Dolan and Olivia Erlanger, who are converting their studio on the second floor of 286 Grand Street into a project space that will be open one weekend a month. It’s called Grand Century.
“Grand Century is a restaurant that you can see when you come into our space,” Ms. Budor told The Observer. “It will definitely be confusing and people might be going into the restaurant.”
Your first chance to find the space, at the corner of Grand and Eldridge (which seems to be the most popular boulevard for new galleries right now), comes this Saturday, March 29, when they open a group show called “٩١١,000 B.C.,” which is organized by Ms. Wara. Each of the three partners will take turns organizing the monthly shows, which will open on Saturday and be on view only through that Sunday.
The opening exhibition is filled with artists that are likely to be new to New York gallerygoers. The list: Anders Dahl Monsen, Bjørnar Pedersen, Christopher Kulendran Thomas, Ida Eritsland, Ilja Karilampi, Kareem Lotfy, Karen Gimle, Kjersti Gjestrud, Mikael Brkic, Phillip Zach, Renaud Jerez, Sandra Vaka Olsen, Tarik H. Hindic and Tor Erik Bøe.
“We want to bring in people who are not so represented in New York,” Ms. Budor said. “More of an international crew.”
