Boeing Gives $30M For Smithsonian Remodel

A massive donation announced today is set to help a classic Smithsonian exhibition fly into the future. The Boeing Company has donated $30 million to Washington, D.C.’s National Air and Space Museum so that the institution can update its primary Milestones of Flight display for its 40th anniversary in 2016.

“The Milestones exhibition, which is the museum’s central and largest space, has looked much the same since the museum opened July 1, 1976,” according to the museum’s press release. Currently, the Ryan NYP “Spirit of St. Louis,” the Bell X-1 “Glamorous Glennis” and Mercury “Friendship 7” are on view in the museum’s Main Hall.

The $30 million renovation of Milestones of Flight will expand the presentation to include the Apollo Lunar Module, the Telstar satellite, and the model of the Starship Enterprise from the “Star Trek” television series. The overhauled exhibition will also include digital displays and a media wall that visitors can use to look up other objects in the collection. The hall will be renamed the Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall.

Additionally, the Boeing donation will be used to upgrade the children’s exhibition “How Things Fly,” support a new educational program, and fund the museum’s annual John H. Glenn Lecture in Space History.

“We are grateful to Boeing for this magnificent contribution,” museum director Gen. J.R. “Jack” Dailey said in a statement. “It will enable us to create an exciting new exhibition concept inspired by innovators, from the Wright brothers to today’s space explorers, and to develop educational experiences for generations of innovators to come.”

“We’re honored to help preserve the legacy of pioneers who transformed an industry and influenced generations of innovators,” Boeing chairman and CEO Jim McNerney said in a statement. “By supporting the National Air and Space Museum with the renovation and expansion of the gallery, we hope to inspire others to dream, design and build the next game changers in aerospace history.”
