Paterson’s Piano to Receive Signals From Moon at Edinburgh Sculpture Park Jupiter Artland

This summer, Edinburgh sculpture park and art gallery Jupiter Artland will present an artwork that will send Morse code signals to the moon. The piece, “Earth-Moon-Earth (Moonlight Sonata Reflected from the Surface of the Moon)” (2007) by Berlin-based, Scottish artist Katie Paterson, will be installed at the gallery from July 17.
“Earth-Moon-Earth” communication is a form of radio transmission that allows Morse code messages to be sent to the moon, reflected off its surface, and received back on Earth. However, many of these signals are lost on the journey. This results in a distorted, broken-sounding reception. Paterson’s work will convert these distorted signals into a musical score, which will be performed on a self-playing piano.
“[Paterson’s] got a complete magic about her,” Jupiter Artland director Nicky Wilson told ARTINFO UK. “”Earth-Moon-Earth” is the kind of thing you might whimsy up one day, but you could never actually create. It’s a very elegant work of art.”
“Earth-Moon-Earth” is part of Jupiter Artland’s 2014 program, which was announced today, and is part of both the Edinburgh Art Festival and GENERATION Scotland.
Other exhibitions during the year include “STROKE” by 2003 Turner Prize nominee Anya Gallaccio, opening on May 17. For this show Gallaccio will cover the gallery walls with 40kg of Belgian Callebrutt dark chocolate.
From July 17, running concurrently with Paterson’s work, Glasgow School of Artgraduate Tessa Lynch will perform a daily ritual of “barn raising” in Jupiter Artland’s orchard. This will involve the construction and deconstruction of a Medieval-style home, carried out by the artist and a team of volunteers.
