Notoriously prolific Pop artist Jim Dine has donated 67 of his works, made between 1982 and 2000, to the Chazen Museum of Art in Madison, Wisconsin. The pieces cover a range of mediums including painting, sculpture, ceramics and photography, but all take the figure of the skull as their subject matter.
“Last summer, Jim Dine was in Madison working on an edition [of prints] at Tandem Press,” Chazen director Russell Panczenko told the University of Wisconsin-Madison news. “I invited him to tour the new building, which had opened in October 2011. He was quite taken with the architecture and how the art was displayed. Over dinner, he asked if the museum would consider a gift of his work.”
An exhibition of the gifted collection titled, “‘I Knew Him’: Jim Dine Skulls, 1982-2000,” will open to the public on May 16, in Madison. A six-foot-tall bronze skull sculpture titled “Ancient Fishing” has already been permanently installed at the front entrance of the museum.
