AMSTERDAM.- Earlier than was the case in previous years, today the Van Gogh Museum has welcomed its millionth visitor of this year. A splendid milestone on the eve of the spectacular renovations in the museum.

Today, the Van Gogh Museum has welcomed its millionth visitor of this year. As compared with the trend in recent years, the number of visitors is ahead of schedule. Adriaan Dönszelmann, Financial Director of the Van Gogh Museum: “So far, we have had a very successful year. More than 500 000 people visited the exhibition of Félix Vallotton: Fire beneath the Ice and The World of Van Gogh: Photographs by Emmy Andriesse is also popular. Moreover, the permanent collection is visited by a consistently large number of people. We are extremely pleased with the overwhelming interest from national and international art lovers. Although the exhibition space on the side of the Museumplein - the Kurokawa wing - is closed, we have nevertheless succeeded in receiving substantially more visitors than in 2012 and 2013. Capacity management with block hours throughout the day, our opening hours on Friday and Saturday nights and our online ticket sales enable us to receive an increasing number of visitors daily.”

Great changes

It is to be expected that the number of visitors to the Van Gogh Museum will keep growing in the coming years: the museum is on the eve of spectacular renovations. The permanent collection of the museum will tell the story about Van Gogh in an innovative way and be made available to the public from 27 November. In the summer of 2015, the Van Gogh Museum will open the doors of its new entrance building on the side of the Museumplein, thereby creating a perfect link with the Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk Museum and the Koninklijk Concertgebouw. The new glass entrance building, architecturally a striking construction, will enable us to facilitate even more visitors.

Museumplein

Frans van der Avert (General Manager Amsterdam Marketing): “The Museumplein, with the new wing of the Stedelijk Museum and the reopened Rijksmuseum, has huge appeal and attracts a large number of museum visitors.”
