NEW YORK, NY.- Tibor de Nagy presents an exhibition of recent oil paintings by John Beerman. The exhibition marks the artist’s fifth with the gallery. It will comprise large and small paintings, many of them plein air, completed in locations near and far: Texas, New Mexico, and outside his door in North Carolina.
The artist’s working method and approach is varied in his new body of work. He has some paintings he completes outside on the spot with great fidelity to the scene, the light, and the specific time of day. This includes a series of small paintings of a church captured at different times of the day, its shadows lengthening as late afternoon arrives. Some large paintings he started out-of-doors, which is a new approach for the artist; and a couple of the very largest paintings were done in the studio based on small oil studies that were completed on location. His works are paeans to the landscape and light.
He has painted in landscapes that are new to him, giving the work a particular intensity and focus. Exacting attention has been paid to indigenous plantings, silver greens and spiky plants in the Texas countryside and lush green verdant trees and shrubs in North Carolina.
Beerman has exhibited widely throughout the United States. He received a B.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design and later attended Skowhegan School of Painting of and Sculpture. His work is represented in numerous public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, among others.
The gallery is also presenting a selection of prints and works on paper by the celebrated New York painter Jane Freilicher. Over the last four years, the artist, who turns ninety in November, has completed four new lithographs. This will be the first time the gallery will exhibit all four together.
Each print depicts a facet of the artist’s work for which she is best known, namely views from her New York and from her Water Mill studios with still life objects in the foreground. One print luxuriates in the intense yellow of a field of goldenrod in late summer. Another celebrates the rich blue night sky and twinkling lights of Manhattan.
In addition, there will be a group of related works on paper, both oils and pastels. They range from the 1980s to 2013.
