
Christie’s to Offer Works from the Shumita and Arani Bose Collection

Christie’s will offer a fine selection of contemporary and modern Indian art from the collection of Shumita and Arani Bose, co-founders of the influential New York-based Bose Pacia gallery, on September 17 in New York as part of its series of six Asian Art Week Fall 2014 sales.
Established in 1994, Bose Pacia was the first gallery in the West specializing exclusively in contemporary South Asian art. The collection of its founders, Shumita and Arani Bose, is one of the most comprehensive and distinguished in the West, according to Christie’s.
“A Pioneering Vision: Works from the Collection of Shumita and Arani Bose” features 26 masterpieces including works by modern masters such as Ram Kumar, Francis Newton Souza, and Vasudeo S. Gaitondeas well as contemporary superstars such as Jitish Kallat and Bharti Kher.
Highlights of the sale include Vasudeo S. Gaitonde’s “Untitled,” 1971 (estimate: US$750,000-900,000), Francis Newton Souza’s monumental masterpiece “The Butcher,” 1962 (estimate: US$ $1,500,000 – $2,000,000), and Bharti Kher’s life-size sculpture of a baby elephant, “I’ve Seen an Elephant Fly,” 2002 (estimate: US$500,000 – $700,000).
“A Pioneering Vision” will be followed by Christie’s “South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art” sale which comprises 70 lots including iconic works by Maqbool Fida Husain, Syed Haider Raza, Manjit Bawa, and Jagdish Swaminathan.
