Pedro Reyes Makes an Infinite Love Seat

2014-10-20 09:01:28 未知

This Moebius Chair, by Pedro Reyes, is in the exhibition called Beyond the Supersquare at the Bronx Museum of the Arts. I like the way it modernizes the classic dos-à-dos love seat while adding reference to it as well. Reye’s chair refers, of course, to the famous one-sided figure described by the mathematician August Ferdinand Moebius, and it’s nice to see the paradox of that figure’s one-sided-ness translated into a physical, functional form. I also like the way the seat represents the symbol for infinity, and the quiet absurdity of having the infinite represented by an obviously bounded, earthly object. Modernism’s ambitions always reached out toward the universal and infinite, even while its objects inevitably stayed earthbound.
