TOLEDO, OH.- A new exhibition showcases the “best of the best” from the Toledo Museum of Art’s works on paper collection.
Looks Good on Paper: Masterworks and Favorites features 100 prints, drawings, watercolors, books and photographs selected for their significance and universal appeal. The free exhibition will be on view through Jan. 11, 2015, in the Museum’s Works on Paper Gallery.
“Our works on paper collection is a major attraction for scholars and the public alike. Looks Good on Paper provides a chance to enjoy the best works in this extensive and fine collection,” said Brian Kennedy, director of the Toledo Museum of Art.
Works on paper are particularly light sensitive and subject to fading. Their exhibition must be limited to preserve them for the enjoyment of future generations.
Curated by Thomas Loeffler, assistant curator of works on paper, and Ed Hill, special projects assistant, the exhibition contains works by Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt van Rijn, Francisco Goya, Vincent van Gogh, Ed Ruscha and Henri Matisse. A first-edition King James Bible, pages from the Gutenberg Bible and photographs by Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen and Ansel Adams, among others, are also included.
Examples from the Museum’s strong collection of photographs include Lady Bartender at Home with a Souvenir Dog, New Orleans, LA., 1964 by Diane Nemerov Arbus (American, 1923–1971) and Mediterranean with Mount Agde by Gustave Le Gray (French, about 1820–1882).
