The Blenheim Art Foundation has announced a new exhibition by renowned American artist Lawrence Weiner, one of the founding figures of Conceptual Art. Opening at Blenheim Palace on October 10th, “Within a Realm of Distance” will feature works from the last few decades of the artist’s career showcased alongside site-specific works created especially for the Palace. The works will be integrated throughout the Palace rooms as well as the monumental exterior of the 18th century building.
According to the Blenheim Art Foundation, the exhibition is a continuation of the artist’s practice, using language as a medium to create a multitude of sculptural forms. “The Blenheim exhibition uses the physical reality of the Palace and the Grounds and the Collections as a support structure to present a body of work that provides the means for the visitor to find their own existential relationship to the world of objects at the moment,” Weiner explained.
Michael Frahm, Director, Blenheim Art Foundation, said: “Lawrence Weiner is undoubtedly one of the most influential artists living today; his work and artistic philosophy have been profoundly relevant for more than 50 years. Known for his founding role in the Conceptual Art movement in the 1960’s, his radical art practice continues to challenge the cultural status quo by exploring propositions about our relationships to objects and places.
“His work is subjective, accessible and functional and he is perhaps best described as a sculptor who has redefined the artist-viewer relationship using language as his primary medium. We are thrilled to collaborate with Lawrence on this extensive exhibition and take visitors on a journey through a simultaneous reality created within the structure of Blenheim Palace.”
The non-profit Blenheim Art Foundation was launched on October 1, 2014 with the opening of the inaugural exhibition Ai Weiwei at Blenheim Palace, marking the beginning of a new initiative at Blenheim palace. The Foundation aims to “challenge convention, breaking away from the ‘white cube’’ aesthetic that has become synonymous with the presentation of contemporary art.
