On November 2, the Asian Works of Art department at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers will conduct an auction of Chinese Works of Art, including Imperial treasures from an important American collection. Built over the course of several decades, this sale includes property from notable collections such as those of Arthur M. Sackler and H. Medill Sarkisian, among others.
The auction will offer an opportunity to access over 500 lots including jade carvings, snuff bottles, porcelain, textiles, bronze castings, furniture, jewelry and ancient utilitarian objects dating from the Warring States and Han Dynasty to the early 20th century. In addition to Chinese objects, the auction includes brief sessions of Korean, Japanese, Indian and Southeast Asian works of art.
Highlights include a pair of monumental Chinese Imperial stone dragon spouts, dated to the late Qianlong period and measuring approximately 48 inches in length; a gold and polychrome enamel open face pocket watch by William Ilbery, with an enameled scene depicting a seated Chinese official; an extensive assemblage of over 1,000 archaic bronzes, formerly of the Arthur M. Sackler collection; a set of six Ming Dynasty ink and color silk panels, painted in continuation, depicting the Buddhist Lantern Festival, Yuan Xiao Festival; and a rare pair of Imperial spinach jade seals, dated to the 18th century and likely of the Qianlong period. The sale also includes numerous jade carvings, porcelain and other ceramic objects, gilt bronze figures, silk textiles, ancestral portraits and snuff bottles.
