Louvre Abu Dhabi Construction on Track Despite Worker Death

Emirati government officials overseeing the final stages of the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s construction on Saadiyat Island say the structure is on track for a mid-2016 handover, the industry publication Attractions Management has reported. An ARTINFO investigation of allegations aired by Gulf Labor confirmed that a worker had been killed on the site earlier this year. The incident does not appear to have resulted in any delays, and Agence France Museums, the French government agency responsible for that country’s side of the joint effort, declined further comment beyond confirming the accident and the existence of an investigation into its causes.
The results of that investigation have not been made public, though the Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC), the Emirati government agency responsible for the Louvre project, had told ARTINFO in a July statement that it “is still working with its contractor and the relevant authorities to investigate how this unfortunate incident took place and to make sure that the necessary measures are taken accordingly.”
Attractions Management noted that the museum’s opening date had previously been delayed due to acquisition efforts, with Louvre Abu Dhabi curator Jean-François Charnier referring to efforts to “fill gaps in the collection.”
Major construction on the structure was completed in October of this year; the final phase of the project entails the removal of temporary retaining walls that will intentionally flood an area underneath the museum with seawater, giving the entire building the illusion of flotation.
