The artist Jimmie Durham has been awarded the 2016 Goslar Kaiserring. Durham, who creates sculptures, installations, paintings, drawings, performances, videos and photographs, began his career as an artist in 1964, and has staged numerous solo exhibitions worldwide, including in Berlin, Munich, London, and Antwerp. He has participated in Documenta in Kassel and the Venice Biennale.
Durham has also been active in the American civil rights movement, working in particular for the rights of Native Americans. He was co-founder and Chairman of the International Indian Treaty Council at the United Nations in the 1970s.
Other winners of the award include Boris Mikhailov, Christo, Joseph Beuys, Max Ernst, and Georg Baselitz.
