“Disguise: Masks and Global African Arts” features work by 25 contemporary artists to demonstrate the hidden realities of the society with the help of masks as the tool. The Brooklyn Museum's presentation at the facility’s Morris A. and Meyer Schapiro Wing, in the city of New York, had commenced on April 29, 2016. The event will continue through September 18.
The show presents contemporary works from Seattle Art Museum and Brooklyn Museum and takes one to the world of the historical African masquerade through the display of video, sounds, installation arts along with photographs and sculptures.
Masks have historically been a part of African art forms as a medium to define relationships - between individuals, communities, environments and to the cosmic level. However, the challenge of keeping its message intact once it is removed from the performance itself, is steep, as a mask tends to reduce itself into a mere object inside the boundaries of the museum wall. The larger message is often lost.
