南京明城墙始建于元至正二十六年(1366)——摄影：杨紫

完成于明洪武末年，前后历时28年

明太祖朱元璋采纳了儒生朱升“高筑墙、广积粮、缓称王”的建议，集中全国之力建成南京都城城墙

明初的南京城共有外郭、京城、皇城、宫城四道城墙

其中京城城墙长35.267公里，有城门13座、水关3座、垛口13616个、窝铺200座

城墙高约14～26米，顶宽2.6～19.75米

Nanjing Ming City Wall 

was built in the twenty-sixth year of Yuan zhizheng (1366) 

and was completed in the last year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty

It lasted 28 years

Ming Taizu Zhu Yuanzhang adopted the suggestion of the Confucian scholar Zhu Sheng to 

“build the wall highaccumulate grainand slowly become the king”

and concentrated the power of the whole country to build the city wall of Nanjing

In the early Ming Dynasty, Nanjing City had four walls: Outer Guo

Jingcheng, Imperial City, and Gongcheng. Among them

the capital city wall is 35.267 kilometers long, with 13 gates, 3 water gates

13,616 fortresses, and 200 wow shops

The city wall is about 14 to 26 meters high and the top width is 2.6 to 19.75 meters

making it the largest city in the world
