2023年4月1日至4月2日,艺术家罗蔷,空间观念个展“回来的楚门”在无限C空间开幕。包含了装置,影像和架上作品共三十件。

END UP TO BE ENDLESS highlights over 30 pieces of Luo Qiang’s recent art works, including installations, videos and images. It constant rethinking and self-critique of her fundamental approach to conceptual art.

《被命运选中的人》2022-2023 收藏级喷绘,综合媒介

展览围绕一个虚构故事展开——罗蔷以一种颠覆性的方式对1998年著名好莱坞影片《楚门的世界》进行了一次续写。彼得·威尔逊的影片讲述了主人公楚门如何从一个伪装成现实的巨型摄影棚中突围,最终走向外部的世界。对此,艺术家却有不同想法:在出走前的最后一刻,楚门改变主意、留了下来,并从此在节目中一直生活到老。回来的楚门将计就计,绑架了整个故事,以及与故事相关的所有人。

Luo Qiang borrowed the idea from the Hollywood film The Truman Show, in which Peter Weir told a story about how Truman realises that his mundane life is only a fiction ever since the beginning and he is actually the main character of a reality show. In the 90’s film Truman finally broke through the barricade of his fake world into the reality outside. Luo Qiang takes the idea and reverses it — at the last moment before leaving, Truman changed his mind. He decided to stay and live on in the show till his death. By doing that Truman managed to take over the entire show and forced everyone involved, the director, the supporting actors and even the audience, to live in his own story for decades.

通过综合运用各种媒介,艺术家将无限C营造成了一个极具个人色彩的居住空间,生活其间的,正是故事的主人公——谎言拆穿三十年后的老年楚门。我们得以窥见楚门的秘密生活:架上作品组成了一面家庭照片墙,在其中,楚门故事中一个个魔鬼般的细节闪现出来。借助半透明材料的叠加,艺术家让图像带上了一种微妙的过去式叙述口吻,观众就像在透过一条条时间隧道观看记忆,激发出生活与记忆、谎言与真实间的自然张力。

Using various media, the artist fabricates a subtle atmosphere and turns Espace C∞ into the apartment of her imaginary protagonist, who lived on there for another 30 years after the lie of Truman Show collapsed. One can find clues of Truman’s secret life everywhere in the space. The pictures hanging on the wall appears no longer as art works in a regular gallery, but as family photos in a real living room. The images come from the original film, they are reproduced by the artist in a ghosting-like way, so that when we look at the pictures, it is almost like we are gazing retroactively at the phantom of Truman’s memories. These are all flaws of Truman’s old false life, each one of them reveals a part of the truth behind the big lie. Why is he still keeping these Images? The suspension itself shows us the tension between essence and representation as well as life and memory.

《角色的斗争》2022-2023 装置作品

影像装置《寻找出路之路》和《讲给自己一百次的故事》则向观众暗示了展览的另一面——艺术家将影像和旧家具结合,讲述了关于楚门的另一个反抗故事。值得一提的是,艺术家马可鲁在影像作品中演出了老年楚门一角,我们将会看到楚门如何从自己的故事内部开凿出一条出路。装置作品《角色的斗争》试图用镜像和胶片重构出故事的背面:配角们的剪影悬在房间半空,艺术家将镜子安置在这些形象之间,向这些图像中添加一系列对准别处的、破碎的视角,而配角们的回忆也恰恰以这种方式被拼贴在空间中。

The video installations Finding a Way Out and A Story to Tell Yourself a Hundred Times lead us to the other facet of the exhibition. The artist projects videos on old furnitures, trying to visualise Truman’s inner struggle and rebellion against the great system, in which he and maybe also every one of us lives; combining images from film and mirror images of readymade objects, the installation Struggle of Characters creates a sort of spatial-collage, which serves structurally exactly as the pendant of our memory — a complex of fragments from various points of view.

仿真手指,身份证打印件,冰,玻璃饭盒

在这里,并非各式各样的媒介在白盒子展厅中凑成了一堂琳琅满目的艺术大观,相反,每一种形式的作品都自然充当了居住空间中的一个日常元素,并为观众提供了指向主角个人生活史的一条关键线索。这是一次关于空间的观念性尝试。因此,“回来的楚门”总体上应当被定义为一次空间观念艺术展览。

It is not a mechanical juxtaposition of artworks through several kinds of media. On the contrary, each piece of work in different form naturally acts as an organic element of Truman’s life and implies a traumatic hard-core of our reality. It makes sense if we take END UP TO BE ENDLESS entirely as one piece of artwork and name it an attempt spatial-conceptual art.

《讲给自己一百次的故事》2022-2023 影像装置

在卫生间水槽上方的镜子中,老年楚门如幽灵般闪现,做着日复一日早起后一系列日常行为:洗脸,刷牙,刮胡子,吃药,佩戴胸章……旁白则讲着另一个故事,关于如何用谎言本身打败谎言。

In the mirror above the bathroom sink, old Truman glimpsed like a ghost, doing a series of daily routines: wash your face, brush your teeth, shave, take medicine, wear a badge... The narrator tells another story about how to beat the lie with the lie itself.

《寻找出路之路》2022-2023 影像装置

特邀出演:艺术家马可鲁

红衣服在《楚门的世界》中象征希望——楚门的挚爱、施维雅遗留在楚门世界里的唯一线索,就是一件挂着徽章的红毛衣,徽章上印着“该如何结束”字样。而在老年楚门的斗争中,红衣服一次又一次损坏。口号从“该如何结束”变成了“结束很容易,但我选择不结束。”楚门决定回来、决定留下。拨开这些毛衣,人们会开到通向另一个空间的路。

The red sweater is a symbol of hope in The Truman Show -- the only clue that Schweya, the Trueman's beloved, has left behind in the Truman show is a red sweater with a badge bearing the words "How it ends." And in the old Truman's struggle, the red suit was damaged again and again. The slogan changed from "How should it end?" to "END  UP TO BE ENDLESS." Truman decided to come back, decided to stay. Push through the sweaters and people will drive to another space.

《迷宫》由一件架上作品和一件影像装置作构成

作品《迷宫》。一个国家的地图被剪碎,碎片被重组为另一张新的地图。地图原本的功能是为人指明方向,这张新的地图却成了一座迷宫。

"Labyrinth." A map of a country is cut up and the pieces are reassembled into a new map. The original function of maps is to point people in the right direction. This new map is a maze.

消费社会,廉价快感包围着我们,真假则不再是问题,越来越多人加入了塞弗。我们观看吃播,用眼睛替代舌头,另一方面,只需要用调味剂,就可以维持最低限度的食物的真实。

In a consumer society surrounded by cheap pleasures, authenticity is no longer an issue, and more and more people are joining Cypher. We watch the food, use our eyes instead of our tongue, and, on the other hand, maintain a minimal amount of authenticity with only the use of flavoring.

吴家南|Wu Jianan

写作者、哲学研究者

目前在杭州和柏林两地工作和生活。先后就读于清华大学和柏林洪堡大学,主要研究领域涉及哲学、文学和艺术史。学术上,他关注认识论层面的、存在论层面的“硬核”哲学议题,希望通过对艺术的处理,能够不仅仅对实证意义上的社会命题进行探讨,也能更进一步,揭示某些存在论的结构。

Espace C∞ 坐落于北京草场地国际艺术村246号院,是一间约50平米的画廊空间,于2022年成立。草场地246号院内一年四季生长着不同的植物,对于北方的城市来说,这里有着难得的惬意,是一座别致的院落,Espace C∞有幸诞生在这里。画廊的理念很简单,比起画廊扩展当下的“空间”,更倾向画廊走向长久的“时间”,比起空间本身,更注重空间与艺术的关系,空间内的每一个角落为艺术家充分提供,为作品表达创造更多可能性。未来的 Espace C∞ 会呈现架上、雕塑、器物、装置、实验项目等多种艺术形式,但不会改变画廊与艺术保持契合的初心。

Espace C∞, located in Yard 246, Caochangdi International Art Village, Beijing, is a 50 square meter gallery space established in 2022. Different plants grow in the courtyard of No. 246 Caochangdi throughout the year. For a northern city, it is a unique courtyard with rare comfort. The concept of the gallery is very simple. Instead of expanding the current "space", the gallery tends to move towards the long-term "time". Instead of space itself, the gallery pays more attention to the relationship between space and art, and every corner of the space fully provides artists with more possibilities for the expression of works. In the future, Espace C∞ will present various art forms such as easel art, sculpture, utensils, installations and experimental projects, but it will not change the original intention of the gallery to keep in line with art.
