Life and Inspiration

I am a lucky fellow. When living in North China, I enjoyed the northern seasonal sceneries. I embraced the vast prairie, the autumnal scene and the winter snow in the Greater Xing'an Mountains. After settling down in South China, I have the colorful subtropical plants, the sunshine, the beach, the sea and the blue sky......It is my deep love of the environment that makes me so devoted to landscape painting. When I first came to Xiamen, a southern coastal city, everything struck me as new: the very big subtropical trees with full blossoms and fruits, and also in striking colors. For example, the tall palm, the captivating silk cotton, the flamboyant flame tree with full-blown flowers, the colorful bougainvilleas, the brilliant Chinese redbud, and also many other unknown plants—they are all so bright and attractive. The scene is unimaginable in North China. The previous limited experiences narrowed my inspiration, not to say firing my imagination, therefore I believe that inspiration can only be obtained from deep understanding of life and the accumulation of experience.
I think inspiration can be got neither from calculated pursue or accidental effort, it can only come to you under a relaxed state of unconsciousness through your conscious quest. In other words, when we have experienced much in our life, the inspiration comes naturally. As the Chinese painter Zhangzao in Tang Dynasty said, "The master teaches the trade, but the apprentice's achievement is self-made." Whose words benefit me a lot. Perhaps it is because of my love of traditional Chinese arts that I quest for imagination and ideal more or less in my paintings. Maybe this is the inheritance of Chinese traditional culture.
Those western artists who are influenced by eastern art have similar ideas. Just like the French Nabi Painter Maurice Denis once commented on Ganguin's works, "......transplant nature into the field of wisdom and imagination", I have more freedom to imagine, to present myself in this field.
My paintings "Scenery-Xiamen University" (1998), "The Seashore in Summer" (1999), "Spring", "In Blossom" (1998) etc. were painted after I had come to Xiamen for three years. They tell my feelings towards the subtropical life, and they are also some rewards for my lonely exploration. How trivial is man compared with nature! The climate and the environment of nature affect man's spiritual states in every moment. The mild climate, the summer sea wind and the soft sandy beach make me relaxed; the cool, comfortable or hot weather make me sleepy and sluggish; and the flowers, fruit and trees around the four seasons make me burst with joy. Besides, the shapes and the colors of the traditional buildings on the campus of Xiamen University present both the western and the eastern culture. In general the varied subtropical plants, the free academic circumstances and the warm sunshine are the sources of my inspiration for the series of my landscape paintings.
Every bit of the campus scenery is worth painting: the foliage of the palm trees hanging low under the scorching sun, the green moss produced by intermittent drizzles, the tender leaves in red and green check, and the fresh palm flowers coming out after the spring rain, sending forth the subtropical flavor — all of these enlighten and brighten people's hearts. What is more amazing is that some tender leaves sprout from purplish red and then turn green. This seems an autumn scene which appears to be spring sprouts in the South. When in the sea, I am even more relaxed and joyful. The bright blue sea is transparent in close shot, making me enchanted and inducing my fantastic reveries. The golden beach and the white-purple waves shining in a distance are like a yellow and white necklace inlaid into a sapphire, dazzling our eyes. I think as long as I can talk with nature by heart and savor attentively its changes, it will bestow me the artistic inspiration.
