New York art dealer Nicole Klagsbrun will close her gallery of thirty years, reports Charlotte Burns of the Art Newspaper, citing overwhelming changes to the structure of the gallery system. “A dealer’s job is to edit an artist’s work, but your eye for quality gets swallowed up by this endless sea of events, fairs, and biennials,” says the gallerist. “The pace of it means you don’t have time to reflect or think, or strategize about the right steps for your artists’ careers.” Klagsburn founded the Cable Gallery with Clarissa Dalrymple in 1984 and established her own gallery in Soho five years later, eventually settling in Chelsea in 1998. The gallery was known for showing the early works of Candida Höfer, Karen Kilimnik, Sarah Morris, Billy Sullivan, Rashid Johnson, and Brendan Fowler. Despite the shuttering, Klagsbrun will continue to work with artists, curating shows and maintaining the estate of Cameron Parsons. “It is the end of a series rather than a closure.”
