During the turbulent times of India's partition in 1947, Nehru, India's first prime minister, decided to set aside 114.59 square kilometers of land in the foothills of Shivalik, north of the capital New Delhi, as the capital city of Punjab, and named it Chandigarh.
The Chandigarh project is the only city-making movement planned by an architect, and two legendary architects, Le Corbusier and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret, worked together on this great project. Chandigarh encapsulated a post-war and post-colonial vision, created a new chapter in the history of architecture, and is one of the most powerful modernist expressions of the twentieth century and a place of pilgrimage for architects today.
Le Corbusier
1887-1965
The most famous architect, urban planner and writer of the 20th century, the radical and main general of the modern architecture movement, the main advocate of modernist architecture, the important founder of machine aesthetics, known as the "flag bearer of modern architecture", the titan of functionalist architecture, known as " Father of Functionalism". He is known as the "father of functionalism". He is also known as the "leading representative of the modern school of architecture or the International School of Form" together with Walter Gropius, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (formerly Maria Ludwig Michael) and Frank Lloyd Wright. The main representatives of the Modern or International School of Architecture".
Pierre Jeanneret
1896–1967
Swiss architect who opened a studio with his cousin Le Corbusier. They designed a series of prestigious 20th century buildings together, such as Villa Savoye and Villa La Roche in Paris. Their collaboration was interrupted during World War II, when Le Corbusier supported the Vichy regime and Pierre joined the French Resistance, and they resumed working together in 1955 to help build the new city of Chandigarh in the Punjab. Le Corbusier devoted relatively little time to the project, while Pierre Jeanneret continued to devote 15 years of his life to it.
In the 1950s, the master designer Pierre Jeanneret was invited by Corbusier to create a number of architectural pieces for the new capital of India, Chandigarh. Among the more than 50 pieces of furniture designed to suit the local character, the "Chandigarh Chair" is now widely collected and was first used extensively in the administrative offices of the Parliament building.
Chandigarh chair, the official name of the Conference Chair, that is, "Parliament House Conference Chair". Because the designer is Pierre Jeanneret, is also called "PJ chair".
Unfortunately, the good times don't last long, the Chandigarh chairs fell out of favor and were largely abandoned as locals preferred more modern designs. At that time, the Chandigarh chairs were abandoned in every corner of the city and piled up into mountains.
It was not until 1999 that the fate of the Chandigarh chairs, which had been on death row for decades, took a turn for the worse. A French furniture dealer, Éric Touchaleaume, went to Chandigarh to buy them in bulk, then spent seven years restoring and finishing them, and they fetched up to $70,000 for a single one at Sotheby's. By now, the Chandigarh chairs were back in the spotlight. By now, the Chandigarh chairs have returned to the limelight once again, attracting widespread attention.
As a series of furniture in the style of mid-century modernism, new and old intertwine, modern and traditional collide, the Chandigarh chair passes through long years and finally becomes a heirloom classic that cannot be surpassed.
The exhibition will land in the form of "Double Time - Collection Level" in INTHE_shop and TanArt Community, based on the overthinking of urban renewal, observing the traces of time and outlining the vision of a new era.
Focusing on art design and home aesthetics, INTHE_shop, together with TanArt Community, which builds diverse art and cultural scenes in urban spaces, is concocting a heirloom fantasy show that travels between Eastern and Western regional cultures, past, present and future. In the utopian vision of Chandigarh, more than ten international design home brands such as House of Finn Juhl, Ton, Davide Groppi, Tecta, Poltronova, ClassiCon, One Collection, Tacchini, Zanotta, etc. are integrated to develop a derivative of the city culture. The interaction is in response to the time letters sent by the hosts in the last century.
Through this exhibition, we expect to extend the dimension of time and space, to show the classics and elegance across the centuries in specific fields, and to be perceived by the public and by the city.
