An Introduction to the UK Creative Industries

01

Introduction to the seminar

No matter from the global scale, or from a single country or city, the cultural and creative industry economy is rapidly growing into one of the most promising industries today, and the United Kingdom in 1998 in its "British creative Industry Path Document" clearly put forward the concept of "creative industry". The creative industry is defined as "an industry that derives from individual creativity, skills and talents and can create wealth and employment opportunities through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property rights". As the first country to put forward this concept, the British government attaches great importance to promoting the development of cultural and creative industries, which caters to the trend of world economic, technological and social changes.

The multi-directional support and management of the government is one of the outstanding features of the development of British creative industries. The British government has set up a number of specialized agencies and issued special documents, which cooperate well with other policy advisory agencies and expert organizations to jointly manage the cultural industry in Britain. It has become a complex, diversified and huge combination involving many social contexts.

Katherine is a Senior Lecturer in Media and Communication and Programme Director for the MSc Media Management. She is an interdisciplinary scholar of the Cultural and Creative Industries whose work is concerned with the intersections of creativity, place and work. She is currently leading an RSE funded project "Mapping networks of care in creative hubs during COVID-19" with Stirling colleagues Dr Maria-Velez Serna and Dr Susan Berridge . Focused on Creative Stirling, the project aims to explore further the ecologies of care mobilised by hub during the early days of the COVID-19 crisis, which were critical in addressing challenges in the local community.

Other recent projects include the RSE funded project: ‘’From the margins to the centre: the role of creative hubs in supporting contemporary craft and creative workers in rural and remote geographies’, the AHRC-funded project ‘Design Innovation for New Growth (DING)’ and the Carnegie funded project ‘Nurturing Scottish Screen Industries Talent: The Case of Outlander’.

Prior to taking up her current post at Stirling, she was employed as a Research Fellow at The Glasgow School of Art on the AHRC-funded Knowledge Exchange Hub ‘Design in Action’ project and the ‘Creative Futures Partnership’ between GSA and Highlands and Islands Enterprise. Katherine holds a PhD from the Urban Studies Department at the University of Glasgow. Her thesis examined the role of place to creative industries sector within the context of a transforming regional city, Manchester UK. Since completing her thesis she has worked in a range of roles in academia (Institute of Design Innovation, The Glasgow School of Art; Dundee Business School, University of Abertay; Centre for Cultural Policy Research, The University of Glasgow) as well as in the private sector (New Media Partners; CCA Global).
