芳草说|我们为什么需要“孩子”? The View: When Children‘s Innocence Slips Away

  儿童节、放暑假、高考--这些关乎“童年”与“长大”的记忆,在6月不断唤起快乐“多巴胺”,勾起人们记忆深处的共鸣。本期《芳草说》,我们将追随艺术家吴梁焰的视角,重回往昔与童年对话,思考、唤回赤子之心,将希望与治愈的力量传递给当下。

  In the realm of Children’s Day, Summer Vacations, and the National College Entrance Examination, where memories of “childhood” and “adulthood” intertwine, June emerges as a vibrant tapestry, evoking deep emotions that resonate across generations. In this issue of The View, we embark on a journey guided by artist Wu Liangyan, return to the past, and engage in a dialogue with childhood. We will contemplate, revive our innocent zeal, and transmit the power of hope and healing to the present.

  我的家乡是个海岛,海浪声就是我的童谣。我有一个天马行空且快乐的童年,自己的玩具自己创造,高山湖泊、碧海青天就是我的游乐场,当我和我童年的伙伴们聚在一起时,总能突发奇想出各种简单有趣的游戏,然后快活地玩到筋疲力尽。

  My hometown is an island, with the sound of waves being my nursery rhyme, where I truly cherish the unrestrained and vigorous childhood, intoxicated in fabricating toys. With high mountains, gurgling lakes, vast seas and boundless clear sky as my paradise, I savored time spent with my pals. Sudden whims about simple yet fascinating games always struck us, thus we would indulge in wild joy until total exhaustion.

  现如今,当我周末走进一家大型购物中心,看到在各种儿童教育培训机构的门口,消磨着时光或昏昏欲睡的家长时,我方才意识到在我记忆中童年该有的样子已经在今天消失了。就连两千多年前在古希腊伯里克利时代的雅典就已经出现的“捉迷藏”,现在几乎已经在大街小巷中难寻踪影,被取而代之的是一种被成人所认可的游戏模式。

  However, nowadays, I realize that the fancy-free childhood in my memory has disappeared. While strolling into a large-scale shopping mall on weekends, I notice parents idling away hours or dozing off at the entrance of various children‘s education and training institutions. Even “hide and seek”, which appeared in Athens in the era of Pericles in ancient Greece more than 2000 years ago, is now almost hard to be traced in streets and alleyways, replaced by a game mode recognized by adults.

  今天的孩子们在这其中获得的不再是无忧无虑的快活,而是变成伪成人的训练。这一幕让我想到当一个儿童在行为举止、语言习惯和对事物的渴望上与一个成人越来越相似时,作为成人的我们会亲切地称这个孩子为“小大人”。

  Today’s children could no longer amuse themselves with simple delights free from cares, but are bathed in rounds of pseudo-adult training, which reminds me that when a kid becomes increasingly similar to an adult in behavior, language habits, and life aspirations, we as adults affectionately refer to this kid as a “miniature adult”.

  “小大人”在今天儿童的成长过程中充当着一个必不可少的重要角色。记得有一次,我到一位朋友家做客时,看到她只有8岁的孩子什么事情都抢着要自己干,一会儿给我拿了些自己爱吃的零食,一会儿给我拿了一个水果,一会儿又拿来了一本她妈妈之前展览的画册翻给我看,最后又在她母亲的要求下流利地背诵出了两首唐诗和一首英文儿歌。我看到她母亲满意的笑容与洋溢着自豪的目光的同时,又想起那个在她这个年纪只会傻玩的自己,我用脸上的笑容掩盖了心中涌出的一阵莫名的不安,我甚至还在内心暗自庆幸这还好不是我。

  “Miniature adults” play an essential role in children‘s growth today. I remember once I paid a visit to a friend, and her 8-year-old kid rushed to do everything, offering me her favorite snacks, then fruit, and a picture album from her mother’s previous exhibition. The eagerly courteous hospitality ended up with a talent show of profuse reciting of two Tang poems and an English nursery rhyme, certainly at her mother‘s request. I thought of myself, who only wildly indulged in the fun at her age, while I noticed her mother’s smile with apparent satisfaction and gaze brimming with pride. I concealed inexplicable uneasiness welled up in my heart with a bright smile, even secretly congratulating myself that it was not me.

  成年人的世界中并非同我小时候畅想的那样更加快乐,而是充斥着艰酸与孤独,在我每吃了一个苦头,每摔了一个跟头,感受命运的辗转难安时,儿时的快活总能让我的内心充满安宁、欢喜,它至今是我最宝贵的财富。

  The world of adults is far from being delightful as I imagined in my childhood, full of arduous hardships and agonizing loneliness. Every time I suffer a heavy blow, or fall over in overcoming the twists and turns of fate, I feel tormented by the affliction of life, and the joys of childhood always come flooding back, pacifying my heart with peace and pleasure. I genuinely treasure those memories as my most precious asset.

  其实,孩子是大人的一面镜子,父母给予孩子多少爱和能量,未来孩子就将会反馈给社会多少爱的能力。孩子更是一个国家的未来、希望。中国传统儒家思想讲“不孝有三,无后为大”,苏东坡也感慨道“无官一身轻,有子万事足。”但是,谁又曾想到,在两宋期间“生子不举”、“溺婴”是当时普遍存在的社会现象。究其原因是战乱频繁、赋税繁重。而在我们生活的今天,2022年全年出生人口仅956万人,最终统计结果自然增长率为-0.60‰。是我国人口60年来首次出现萎缩;有分析认为,这标志着中国已经进入“人口负增长时代”。

  Kids are a “mirror” of adults, as their future love for society will depend on the affection endowed to them by their parents during childhood. Kids are the future and hope of a country. Traditional Chinese Confucianism emphasizes that “Having no male heir is the gravest of the three cardinal offenses against filial piety” while Su Dongpo, renowned litterateur of the Northern Song Dynasty, also lamented, “It is a blessing to hold public office no more and producing offspring is sufficient.” However, who would have thought that during the Song Dynasty, “giving birth without raising the kid” and “drowning infants” were common social phenomena, which resulted from frequent wars and heavy taxation. Presently, the total birth population in 2022 is only 9.56 million, and the final statistical result shows a natural growth rate of -0.60‰, marking the first time in 60 years that China‘s population has contracted. Some analysts hold that it represents China’s entry into the era of “negative population growth”.

  不难想象,被现实折磨到疲软的年轻人,在快节奏的城市生活中为了寻找到一份安全感只能马不停蹄。房贷、车贷,加班熬夜、不敢生病、失业率的上升导致内心的不安全感急速膨胀,于是伴随着各种各样的焦虑,我们只能不停地想尽办法去填满那缺失的安全感。可当我们越是努力去抵消内心的不安似乎它又伴随这高速发展的社会愈演愈烈。于是我们在循环往复的一个怪圈里不停地徘徊,这种不安也顺其自然地附加在孩子的身上。生活在今天的父母们,按照自己心中理想的模式去塑造着他们的孩子;而孩子们也终日奔波于各种兴趣班中,以满足父母的用心良苦。

  It is not difficult to imagine that the young generation, tortured by distress in reality, could only push on in their life journey without stopping, in a desperate quest for a sense of security in the fast-paced city life. The housing and car loans, extra work shifts, all-night stay-up, fear of sickness, and rising unemployment rates have stirred up and aggravated their inner insecurity. Anguished by anxieties, they could not but exert themselves to the limit to make up for the lack of security. However, as we strive harder to offset our inner uneasiness, it seems to become increasingly intense in this rapidly developing society. Consequently, we linger about and get lost in a peculiar endless cycle, and this uneasiness naturally entraps our kids. Today‘s parents rush to nurture their kids according to their ideal modes, while kids also bury themselves in kinds of interest classes all day long to satisfy their parents’ expectations.

  孩子身体里本是住着整个世界,可是如今孩子们的游戏就像是一条百米跑道,孩子们只有向着终点不停地奔跑,而眼前的终点又是另一个新的起点。教育的功能与功利性束缚着孩子们纯真的天性,最终塑造出一个个实现目标的工具。可是,想象力、创造力并非能通过竞争式的学习训练获得,在希腊语中“学校”一词的本意是“闲暇”,因为在希腊人眼中,只有一个闲暇的人才会花时间去思考和学习。孟子曰:“大人者,不失其赤子之心。”如果童年与成年的分界线已经变得十分模糊,儿童的天真无邪与好奇的童心被一股无形的社会动能逐渐削弱,扭曲成为一个个伪成人的面目,真正的赤子之心又要到哪里去寻得呢?

  The kids harbor inherent curiosity for the whole world, yet today, their game is like a 100-meter track, where they can only spare no effort to run in a great hurry towards the finish line, as the finish line is another new starting point. The function and utilitarianism of education constrain children‘s pure nature, ultimately shaping them into tools for achieving goals. Imagination and creativity, however, cannot be acquired through competitive learning and training. In Greek, the term “school” originally means “leisure”, as for Greeks, a person, only blessed with relaxation in leisure, could be endowed with the wealth of free time to plunge themselves into pondering and learning. As Mencius said, “A great man retains the heart of a newborn babe.” If the boundary between childhood and adulthood has become perilously blurred, the uncontaminated innocence and curiosity of kids are gradually eroded by an invisible social momentum, distorted into pseudo adults, where could we pursue purity?

  其实,人的一生最终极的追求是什么?身体的自由,财富的自由,关系的自由,心灵的自由,佛家讲“无所住而生其心”,即是一种由内而生的自由。我们本是自然的一份子,而接近自然才是满足自我的最好方式。童心是一张白纸。应该让它无拘无束地生长,在青山绿水中奔跑,与小伙伴们快快乐乐地玩耍,大胆地去想象,探索未知的世界。

  What is the ultimate pursuit of a person’s life? Freedom of the body, freedom of wealth, freedom of relationships, and freedom of the mind? According to Buddhism, humans should develop a mind which does not abide by anything, translating into freedom born from within. We are originally an integral segment of nature, and approaching nature is the best way to satisfy ourselves. Children‘s innocence is like a blank sheet of paper, which should be unrestrained by kinds of shackles. Kids should be granted freedom to grow without constraints, embrace nature, seek fun with pals, indulge themselves in imagination, and explore the unknown world.

  如果你曾醉心过“牧童骑黄牛,歌声振林樾”的田园诗境,那么也希望你能在《国宝》系列作品中找到某种共鸣。长着圆圆耳朵的孩童犹如一只可爱的熊猫,洋溢的快乐、悠扬的笛声、停在肩旁头顶的小鸟,或许能带我们进入一个人与自然心灵相融的境地。

  If you have ever been enamored with the pastoral beauty and serenity of the poetry of “a shepherd boy rides on the back of the yellow cattle, his singing vibrating in the forest”, you can definitely resonate in my series National Treasure. In the work, the child with round ears, resembling a cute panda, is brimming with happiness, with the melodious flute sound flowing in the air and the bird perching on his shoulder. The scene will lead us into a state of spiritual harmony between human and nature.

  未成年的孩童形态丰富,顶着一个个可爱的大脑袋瓜儿,看起来个个乐观向上,勤奋好学,似乎对一切都满意自信,这种具有特殊象征意义的形象是属于几代人的共同记忆。与此同时,从民国时期到今天的小学课本,画面里同样是是几代人的共同记忆,就像一张张老照片,记录了每个时期的小学课本在设计上的视觉冲击力,折射出每个时代的背景下产生的教育思想之转变。

  These works are featured with underage children, with diverse characteristics, all with lovely heads, energetic with optimism, diligent and studious, and full of confidence in the whole world. According to me, the image of the children with special symbolic significance corresponds to the shared memory of several generations. From the Republic of China era to present primary school textbooks, the images are also the shared memory of several generations, like photos with a sense of time, recording the visual impact of the design of primary school textbooks in each period, and reflecting the transformations in educational ideas generated in the context of each era.

  我尝试借用成人的视角,重回往昔与童年对话,并将曾经沉默的心声传递给当下的自己。教育的本质是对觉醒、觉知、觉察、觉悟的塑造,它让我们拥有独立的思想、无限可能的创造力、一份责任感,最终对世界有一个远大的理想与抱负,所谓你是谁?能做什么?能留下什么?

  I try, in an adult’s perspective, to return to the past to have a conversation with my childhood, and to convey the previously silent voice to my current self. Education, in essence, is the formation of awakening, awareness, perception and consciousness, which empowers us with independent thought, infinite creativity, a sense of responsibility, and ultimately a lofty ambition and aspiration in exploring the wonders of the world, namely the identity, the accomplishments and the legacy.
