Modern society is situated in an era where multicultural intermingling and technological development are ongoing. We‘ve noticed an undeniable trend of homogenization emerging around us. In this age of information explosion, a staggering amount of news and information is disseminated through the internet at a breathtaking pace. This allows people globally to access the same information, form similar opinions, become familiar with identical behavior patterns, and gradually demonstrate a convergence in lifestyle. In his Mr. Duck series, artist Lai Junjie presents this phenomenon to his audience from a unique and thought-provoking perspective.

The artist replaces the heads of figures in classic Western and Eastern sculptures with duck heads, humorously demonstrating the result of cultural exchange and interaction in the era of globalization. Despite a seemingly diverse range of forms and content, it may lead to the issue of cultural homogenization. During the process of extensive cultural interaction and fusion, the mainstream or dominant culture often takes the lead, resulting in the dilution of original cultural features and individuality, leading to a trend towards homogenization. In this process, we seem to observe a rise in collective behavior, where the power of the collective unconscious subtly influences us, prompting us to reevaluate the transformation of individual identity under the influence of social homogenization.

Under the trends of globalization and digitalization, individuals are absorbed into a mass culture that possesses a powerful assimilative force. However, does this collective behavior and trend towards homogenization lead to a real loss of individual independence and uniqueness? This is a crucial sociological question. Lai Junjie’s works, symbolizing this trend of homogenization with the image of Mr. Duck, invite us to contemplate this profound question.

Moreover, each ‘duck-headed’ person clutches an invisible “something” in their hands, and in each set of works, they are all staring at this “something.” This invisible “something” could represent a stubborn fixation or hint at the permeation and influence of technology in our lives. Against the backdrop of digitalization and informatization, our lives, habits, and ways of thinking are all profoundly shaped and changed by technology. Our social modes, life rhythms, cognitive habits, etc., are all gravitating towards homogeneity, prompting the need to view this issue from a philosophical     perspective.

A thorough reading of this series of works will lead viewers to deep reflections on human nature and free will. If we all become ‘duck-headed’ people immersed in the virtual world, clutching our mobile phones, then how much of our real selves is left? Are our actions and thoughts still free, or are they controlled by the power of information technology and mass culture?

In this era of globalization and technological advancement, we need to be constantly vigilant and reflect on the impact of homogenization. In Lai Junjie’s MR.DUCK series, we see a true portrayal of this era and the artist‘s profound reflection on the issue of homogenization. His works represent a keen observation and unique interpretation of contemporary society, as well as a call for the preservation of cultural diversity and spiritual freedom.
