Robin Scher reports at Artnews that artists Sara Cwynar and Mary Reid Kelley were announced as the winners of the Baloise Art Prize at Art Basel yesterday. The prize is an annual award sponsored by the European financial services provider Baloise Group and each artist be awarded a cash prize of about $31,000. A selection of each’s work from the Statements section of the fair will also be donated to Frankfurt’s Museum für Moderne Kunst and the MUDAM museum in Luxembourg.

Cwynar won with a video essay titled Soft Film, for which the artist arranged and recorded discarded personal mementos and photographs sourced on eBay and from secondhand stores. Kelley’s piece is a film titled This is Offal, which is set in a morgue and includes a dialogue between the ghost of a dead woman and her animated organs.

The winners were decided by an international panel of judges that included directors from both the MMK and MUDAM museums.
